Golfers break 20-year drought in Kingaroy

GOLF: Golf Central Queensland / Golf Central Highlands have taken out the Meg Nunn Salver Shield for the first time in two decades.

The team of Toni Morgan (Emerald), Cheryl Fisher (BoyneTannum), Casey Drochmann (Biloela),Trudy Morgan (Emerald), Sonia Bray (Emerald), Marti Kendall (Yeppoon) and non-playing captain Carmel O'Keeffe (Springsure) took on six other Queensland Ladies Golf Districts at the Kingaroy Golf Club.

The women from Golf Central Queensland / Golf Central Highlands were tied with Sunshine Coast Burnett and District North Queensland on 28.5 points and they played against North Queensland on the final day on Friday.

Chair ladie's match committee's Kate Bell says Golf Central Queensland / Golf Central Highlands were in an advantageous position heading in the final day.

"They were in an almost unbeatable position, as the host district had finished all their matches,” Bell said.

The results were as follows: Cheryl Fisher (15 handicap) won 8-7 against Julie Laslett (13 handicap) Trudy Morgan (11 handicap) lost 2-1 against Nola Giddins (12 handicap), Casey Drochmann (10 handicap) won two up against Trish McNeil (11 handicap).

Toni Morgan (five handicap) squared her match against Bev Hockings (nine handicap) and Sonia Bray (five handicap) lost one down against Fiona Bell (six handicap)

The final results for the tournament were Golf Central Queensland / Golf Central Highlands on 30 points followed by Sunshine Coast Burnett and District 28.5, North Queensland 23.5, Far North Queensland 19.5,

Downs and South Western 16.5, Brisbane and District 15.5, Gold Coast 13.5. "It is 20 years since our team has won the Meg Nunn Salver and what great excitement this has caused through our districts,” Kate Bell said.
