Golding leaves lasting legacy in city's business culture
CYRIL Golding created a business legacy that has lasted half a century in the Gladstone region.
When veterans of Gladstone's business community talk about Mr Golding, they speak with reverence.
They say he set the standard for all aspects of business in Gladstone as a brilliant entrepreneur, a leader committed to his workers and a businessman passionate about his community.
He didn't just succeed in building a business.
He created a culture that can still be seen in Gladstone's business community today.
His earthmoving business was already going nicely, but winning a major contract on the construction of QAL in the mid-1960s launched Mr Golding to a new level, and his business went on to become one of the biggest private companies in Australia.
His success proved that Gladstone-based companies had the talent and determination to achieve great things.
He also proved that when a business valued its people above all else and cared deeply about its community, it could help that community become a better place.
The Gladstone region has industry embedded in its culture.
Now that Mr Golding has died, will there be another leader capable of filling his shoes?
Perhaps the truth is that no one leader is capable of that, and it will take a collection of business leaders following his example to continue the job of ensuring successful businesses play a vital role for the community.
