Gladstone’s hockey women fall short in grand final
GLADSTONE'S women's hockey team came home without the silverware, but with plenty of admiration after the Queensland State Hockey Championships in Brisbane.
The side was thrashed by a classy Toowoomba outfit in the decider 5-0 which made it back-to-back titles for Toowoomba.
Hockey Queensland regional development manager and coach Jordyn Wilson said Toowoomba were the benchmark.
"Toowoomba in the final were too good on the day and they were well prepared and coached," Wilson said.
"Our women were fantastic throughout the tournament and the more they played together, the more they clicked and got better and better each game."
Gladstone began its campaign with a first-round 2-1 loss to Townsville with Rosie Malone as the sole goal-scorer.
The result was much better in game two against Ipswich in which Malone added a double to her name along with Lindsay Mathison.
Malone's rich vein of scoring form continued where she scored a hat-trick against Bundaberg in Gladstone's 5-3 win.
Gladstone then qualified for the grand final after a 3-3 draw against Tweed Border because it finished first in its pool.
Gladstone's under 13 boys went one better to take out the junior championships played in Mackay.
A 1-1 draw against Rockhampton was enough for Gladstone to be deemed as champions after it finished first in its pool.
An equalising goal to Dylan Rose after Rocky had led for the most part effectively sealed the title for Gladstone.
Wilson said Dylan, Haydn Pease and Riley Bobart were standouts.
Gladstone's under 15 girls made the final but unfortunately were beaten 4-0 in the decider to Rockhampton.
It was also the same unfortunate result for Gladstone's under 13 girl's side which went down 3-1 to Mackay Black in the grand final.
