Gladstone's Gibb locks in great win for 'Gulls

RUGBY LEAGUE: Former Gladstone Valleys and Brothers junior Brendon Gibb fulfilled a dream by scoring a winning try for his Wynnum Manly Seagulls in round three of the Intrust Super Cup.

The powerhouse lock also got the XXXX man of the match in the Seagulls' 24-18 triumph against Tweed Heads Seagulls.

Gibb, 28, progressing through representative ranks and went on to play three NRL games for Brisbane Broncos in 2012.

After an injury-interrupted season in 2016, Gibb is setting himself for a stellar season.

"Last weekend for me was massive and I had a pretty terrible year last year with injury and all that sort of stuff," Gibb said.

"I ended up having three operations and I was wondering if I was going to play again and I decided to have another crack for it all to click.

"I have done everything I possibly can to get back on the field and had a pretty bad shoulder injury and a knee operation to get a clean-out."

Gibb left Gladstone in 2007 when he pounced on the chance where there was a clear pathway toward elite level.

"I got an opportunity to go up to Rockhampton and play at the Comets," he said.

"I was playing on the wing there and always wanted to take it a bit further and getting that opportunity at the Comets was sort of where that path started.

"Broncos 20s brought me down to Brisbane at the end of 2007 and the first year of the Toyota Cup where it all sort of kick-started."

Gibb said he is proud of his time at the Brisbane Broncos and there were two highlights.

"I played up in Townsville in front of all my family and (made my) debut in Sydney against the Roosters and that was the one game that we won," Gibb said.

"That was a pretty understrength Broncos team against a fairly good Roosters' side during the Origin period.

"That was a pretty massive win and then I got another game where I started and played most of it against the Sharks."

Gibb said he gets just as much joy out of playing at Queensland Rugby League level than when he did with the Broncos.

Gibb will be in action against lowly Mackay Cutters tomorrow from 6pm in Brisbane.
