William Gladstone stamp a rarity in nameplace

AMATEUR historian Charlie Sutton reckons he's the only person in Gladstone with a rare stamp featuring William Gladstone.

Mr Sutton has lived in Gladstone since 1974 and was chuffed this week to get his hands on a 97p stamp of the four-term English prime minister.

He wrote a letter to his nephew in England after reading an article in The Observer (August 15) about the stamp, asking him to track it down.

His nephew trekked across the countryside to find and post them to his "favourite" and only uncle, who lives in Clinton.

"I am going to be the first to have it, and I got a personal touch," Mr Sutton said. "They did all the running around for me.

"It took my nephew two weeks to get them.

"Newcastle didn't have them so he had to travel half an hour on the train to the South Shields Post Office."

Mr Sutton was delighted to open his mail box on Thursday.

"I thought I would get one stamp of William Gladstone but there were eight stamps," he said.

The collection celebrates the 200th anniversary of the Prime Minister's office in Britain with a Royal Mail stamp collection launched in October.

Eight major figures in England's history such as Margaret Thatcher and Winston Churchill appear on the other stamps which can only be bought in England.

Mr Sutton said he was curious to know if other members of the public had the stamps.

"You would have to buy them over the internet," Mr Sutton said.
