BMD Championships begin
GLADSTONE’S premier tennis event will bounce into action this morning.
The four-day BMD Open Hardcourt Championships begins this morning with the first match starting at 10am.
The Australian Ranking and platinum money tournament has $16,000 in prize money up for grabs.
Tournament committee and Gladstone Tennis Club life member, Ron Street said everything able to be done prior to the commencement of the competition was completed.
But he acknowledged that once matches began, there would be plenty of work to keep workers and players occupied.
Street was expecting a strong crowd turn out over the course of the four days.
“Normally we do (get a decent crowd) because we’ve got some top line players,” Street said.
The only tournament of its kind in the Central Queensland/Wide Bay area, the Hardcourt Championship incorporates doubles, mixed doubles, lower grade and junior categories as opposed to most that only accommodate the open categories. Open competitions get underway today before aged and A, B and C-grade rounds on the weekend.
Food and drink will be available as well as plenty of tennis action next to Rigby Park off Glenlyon Road, Gladstone.
