Gladstone's Kaena Truskett, 13, played for Capras at state championships

Gladstone under-13 player scouted by the Brisbane Broncos

BROTHERS under-13 forward Kaena Truskett has taken big steps towards a future rugby league career.

After he starred for the Central Queensland Capras U13 side at the recent state championships and was named the Capras' best of the tournament, young Truskett has been scouted by the Brisbane Broncos.

The rangy Truskett can play front or back row, and scored 29 tries last season.

He overcame a foot ligament injury before the state championships to produce outstanding performances which secured his role in the Broncos elite player development squad.

In a club famously focused on developing its own rather than going to the market, Truskett has taken his first steps towards forcing his way into an NRL first-grade squad, like recent squad graduate Ben Hunt has at Brisbane.

Brothers U13 co-coach Leif Audet said Truskett showed plenty of promise, and had a great attitude towards the game.

"He's a great kid to have around, you give him an instruction and he does it straight away without any complaints," Audet said.

"He can do a lot. He's been playing front row and second row for us and as he's developed he's become a very strong second-rower."

Truskett recently turned 13, and his size and speed was something that caught the eye of scouts when he represented the Capras, said his other Brothers co-coach, Richard Duff, a recruitment development officer with the Broncos.

"He's quite quick and we'd like to see more of his footwork which is also quite good," Duff said.

While he played in the forwards, Duff said they had not pigeon-holed Truskett.

"It's a bit hard to say with the way the game is these days. They're all big, strong guys," he said.

Audet said Truskett's future was in his hands now.

"If he puts his head down and works hard he can be whatever he wants to be," Audet said.
