Gladstone quartet return from CQ duty
SOCCER: Having recently returned from a Spanish footballing odyssey, CQ Mariners' under-12 striker Tiaan Engelbrecht had little time to rest as he and three other Gladstone players represented the Capricornia U12 team in Hervey Bay last week.
Engelbrecht, Maksim Bijelic, Lachlan Wembridge and Joshua Wilson all flew the flag for Gladstone at the Queensland School Sport 10-12 years Football State Championships held over July 27-30.
Played between 12 school sport regions from across the state, a Queensland team was selected to compete at the Pacific School Games to be held from December 1-10 in Adelaide.
The Capricornia team had a mixed tournament results-wise, returning home with one win, three draws and two losses.
The side's indifferent form meant that unfortunately none of the CQ contingent gained state selection, but Tiaan's father, Chris said that missing out on a Queensland cap didn't break the boy's spirit.
"The kids played fairly well but in a positive light even though they drew a lot a games and lost the last two they never dropped their faces and that showed character,” Engelbrecht Snr. said.
"The one thing that stood up was the facial expression of the boys; no one was sad and accepted that they didn't get selected.”
Engelbrecht said Maksim and Lachlan combined well in the midfield, Joshua showed excellent speed on the right wing and Tiaan's movement at striker caused the opposition defenders many headaches throughout the four-day championships.
