Gladstone Port City Power on trial

BASKETBALL: Gladstone Port City Power will begin its 2017 campaign tonight with a trial against local rivals Rockhampton Rockets.

Tonight's clash will allow Power coach Blair Smith an opportunity to see how his squad is shaping up as it gears up for the April 29 season-opener at home against Mackay Meteors.

Port City Power has recently signed up 198cm forward Patrick Ciganovic, who is originally from Adelaide.

The 23-year-old Mount Marty College (South Dakota) graduate was a standout performer with the Lancers in his four years in Yankton, South Dakota where he finished his senior year with Great Plains Athletic Conference (which covers Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota) All Conference team mentions as well as finishing in the top five for rebounds.

Ciganovic is expected to bring some fantastic tenacity on the boards at both ends of the court and is a handy shooter from beyond the perimeter.

Smith said he was very excited to bring the former South Australian under-18s player to the Power.

"Patrick is known for his high basketball IQ and his ability to make plays for his teammates,” Smith said.

"He is a good defender who can guard multiple positions and an outstanding rebounder.

"He (Ciganovic) was exactly the type of player we were looking for to complete our roster and we are excited by what he can bring to the team.”

Port City Power is hoping to improve on last year's 10th place finish, where it went through the season with seven wins and nine losses.

Tonight's trial tips off at 7pm at Kev Broome Stadium.

Entry is $10 for adults, kids are free.
