KERRY Perrie's favourite pastime is Facebook.

The tech-savvy Gladstone resident also enjoys spending time on her smart phone, laptop and desktop computer.

After joining the social media site in her 50s, Kerry decided to create a page which would fast become a popular meeting place for those in her demographic.

Over 50s Women and Men was created in Gladstone in 2009 and has since attracted a global following.

"We've seen members come from all over the world," Kerry said.

"I set this up so people could go and have coffee, but it's become much more than that."

The site has members from all over the world including the Netherlands, Britain, the US and Canada.

"They are like your penpals from yesteryear," Kerry said.

"When you're over 50 you want to meet people aged between 50 and 60 years old.

"It's all about connecting with people."

The 234 members on the site talk about anything from current affairs, to health issues and sharing recipes.

But one thing Kerry has found since starting the site is that many people are just looking for company.

The other day Kerry comforted a lady online who said she was lonely on her page.

"People want someone they can talk to. They can talk to us," she said.

And Kerry has even made some close friends along the way.

Co-founder and fellow Gladstone resident Astrid Allison is a member of the site, along with Gladstone Mayor Gail Sellers, local MP Liz Cunningham and Federal Member Ken O'Dowd.

"We were very excited when Ken joined. That's saying something about the group," Kerry said.

But Kerry understands the limitations of the site.

"Facebook friends are Facebook friends. Some of the friendships you wouldn't have in real life," she said.
