Gladstone must step up to pay for Capras matches

STEP UP and help raise $50,000 - that's the call from Gladstone and District Rugby League after the official announcement of Intrust Super Cup games at Marley Brown Oval.

As promised by Capras CEO Denis Keeffe last year, the cup team's schedule includes four local games.

Each match will cost Gladstone and District Rugby League $13,000 to host.

The task of covering the cost will fall heavily on Peter White, who is Gladstone's off-field representative with the Capras.

"We really need Gladstone business to support us as well, to keep having the quality here," White said.

"The Thursday night before Easter will be a great night, a good way to kickstart the long weekend."

Keeffe told The Observer in August he was pleased with the turnout at the game and the efforts of the off-field organisers.

While the news is what local rugby league fans have been hoping for, and also feeds the hunger of coach Jason Hetherington, who brought a training squad to Gladstone and visits his players here fortnightly, the hard work for local officials now begins.

Capras at Marley Brown:

  • April 17 - vs Wynnum Manly Seagulls
  • May 24 - vs PNG Hunters
  • June 14 - vs Souths Logan
  • August 2 - vs Sunshine Coast Falcons
