Gladstone Marina bridge closes to traffic for a week

GLADSTONE'S Matthew Flinders Bridge at the marina will be closed to all vehicles and pedestrians from 5am on Tuesday until 6pm on February 1 while work is carried out.

Gladstone Regional Council engineering services portfolio spokesperson Rick Hansen said revised engineering plans required the road to be closed to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic throughout the project.

"Due to the scope of the works and to ensure the safety of all, a full bridge closure will be implemented for the project's entire five-day duration," Cr Hansen said.

The bridge closure will affect mariners, large vessel operators, motorists and pedestrians.

"The hydraulic mechanism which operates the drawbridge action is in urgent need of replacement and it is vital that maintenance be carried out immediately to rectify the problem," Cr Hansen said.

"Council is mindful of the inconvenience caused by the bridge closure, but safety of all is crucial while removal and installation of the hydraulic component occurs."

Alternative vehicle access is available via Hanson Road and Alf O'Rourke Drive, but the opening function of the bridge will be closed to all tall marine traffic.
