Gladstone Gropers to make splash
FUN, fitness and friendship has been shared by swimmers of the Gladstone Gropers Masters Swimming Club for 25 years.
The club currently has 80 members aged from 18 through to 78, enjoying the social and physical aspects associated with the sport.
"Our club is for everyone, from 18 through to well the day you die. We have had members in their 90s before,"; club member Geoff Graham said.
"Our current eldest swimmer is in fact still breaking records and can belt the ears off me in the pool.";
To celebrate 25 years the Gropers will be bringing back their charity swim events.
"Our last charity swim was in 2005 and over the 25 years we have conducted 13,"; Graham said.
"We are really looking forward to starting them again and it is good that we can do so in conjunction with our 25 year celebrations.";
Between 40 to 50 swimmers, across five teams, will take to the Gladstone Aquatic Centre 25m pool tomorrow in aid of the Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland. Each team must swim a combined distance of 25km, 1000 laps of the pool, between 7am and 3pm.
"Most people will swim 6-8km each for their team, depending on their ability in the pool,"; Graham said.
"This is a long distance for most people but our swimmers are fully prepared, swimming close to 6km every week on club nights and Sundays.";
The Gropers hope to raise between $3000-$5000.
