Gladstone girl embarks on trip to aid Kenyan villages
SAMANTHA Austin has a heart for helping others.
The local girl is gearing up for her first trip outside of Queensland, and she is not doing things by halves.
Ms Austin will leave Australia on July 21, embarking on a six-week trip to Kenya, five of which is part of a mission trip to poverty-stricken villages.
Her inspiration came from her sister, who did the same trip two years ago.
Samantha said her long-term plans are to study as a nurse and eventually take her skills to third-world countries to help others.
So far Sam has raised about $1900 and hopes to gather as much as she can before she left.
Samantha is travelling as part of a World Youth International initiative and is paying her own way, with all funds raised going directly to the village.
It seems a drastic journey for her first overseas trip, but Samantha said she had the full support of family and friends.
"Mum's very into helping others and right into it, dad's a little more of a homebody but he's fully behind me doing this for such a good cause," she said.
