Gladstone duo off to states in Brisbane

ATHLETICS: In what is a growing trend, two more Gladstone teenagers have been chosen for representative squads.

Sophie Duff and Maddie Sherriff will compete in the Queensland Athletics Championships in Brisbane which starts on Friday.

Sophie will compete in the under-15 girl's long-jump, triple-jump and 100m sprints.

Maddie will compete in the U18 girl's shotput and discus.

She has already qualified for the national championships later next month in discus.

Seventeen-year-old Maddie will also attempt to qualify at the U20 level in the discus.

"It would be good to get personal best times in all of them and I'm hoping to qualify for the nationals in the U20 discus and that is by making a distance of 39m or make the top three,” Maddie said.

She trains before and after school with her dad John Sherriff and also gets expert advice in Bundaberg.

"We go to Bundy once a month and Taryn Gollshewsky is my coach there,” Maddie said.

Gollshewsky competed in discus for Australia at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

"She just advises me on throwing, speed and balance as well as all the little fiddly aspects,” Maddie said.

Maddie and Sophie take the opportunity to help each other out in training too.

"Sophie has done well at nationals previously and we help each other out whenever we can,” Maddie said.

"Both sports are very individually-based.”
