VIDEO: Gladstone Cup winner one second shy of record

UPDATE MONDAY: Six-and-a-half lengths stood between the winner of the Gladstone Cup and second place.

As the horses came round the final corner and onto the straight, the only thing punters could hear were screams of encouragement for jockey Nicole Vuille, who rode John Pointon's Ferment to victory.

Vuille finished the 1608m race in 1.40.64, just a bit over a second behind the track record of 1.39.49.

For trainer Prue Howard it was a personal milestone because it was the first time she started all the horses, on behalf of John Pointon, who is in hospital, and won.

"I am ecstatic," Howard said. "We love racing here but it's not an easy track because of the sand, not all horses can handle it," she said.

"(Ferment) has got to come from behind. I told Nicole to trust him and she did everything I asked.

"It was a brilliant ride."

Vuille said at first she wasn't sure if she should hold the gelding back as they tore around the sand track.

"He was going hard and I could tell he wanted to charge," Vuille said.

"In the end, I just let him roll and hoped he had judged the corners right. I was worried he was too close, but he knew what to do."

First place in the Gladstone Cup is worth a total of $15,000,

Jockey Jessie Philpot came in a clear second.

Philpot managed to land her first double at the meeting.

She finished first in Race 1, on Tony Hess's Way Up there, and in Race 4 on Barry Gill's Duan Major.

It was a great meeting for the jockey who is trying to work her way up to the top class.
