Gladstone Airport claims top prize

GLADSTONE Airport has won the coveted Regional Airport of the Year award for airports servicing 50,000 to 499,000 passengers.

The Australian Airports Association's (AAA) National Airport Industry Awards were announced in Brisbane on Tuesday night and Mayor Gail Sellers and Cr Clyde Cameron were there to accept the honour.

Cr Sellers told The Observer yesterday the award was great recognition.

"After amalgamation we put ourselves on the line to borrow $65 million for the airport upgrade," she said.

There were two full tables at the awards ceremony - with council staff, former council chief executive Graeme Kanofski, as well as architects and contractors involved in the upgrade.

Cr Sellers said it was a testament to the council who "did it on our own", with no contributions from State Government and only $5 million funding from the Federal Government.

AAA executive director Caroline Wilkie said the major upgrade at Gladstone Airport was a planning success story.

"Prompted by forecast growth in the local community, the Gladstone Airport Upgrade Project was conceived after the airport identified pavement failures under existing Q400 operations," she said.

Flying High

Gladstone beat out airports in Albury, Geraldton, Emerald and Mt Isa to win the award.

The airport upgrade included an upgrade of the runway pavements to B737/A320 capability, terminal works and passenger/ checked bag screening.
