Gladdy boys enjoying time at softball nationals

SOFTBALL: Gladstone duo Nick Gehrmann and Connor Edgerton are performing well at the Under-15 Boys National Softball Championships in the ACT as their Queensland Storm side look to make a charge towards the finals.

The Storm brushed aside South Australia 14-7 on Thursday to keep pressure on the top end of the standings as the competition entered the knock-out stage yesterday.

Storm were due to play Victoria at 6pm yesterday, with the winner of that clash to face NSW Metro Orange.

The Queenslanders defeated Victoria 14-10 in game five of the championships, giving them a psychological advantage ahead of the encounter.

Darryl Edgerton has been studying the form of competition and said the Storm have had their moments so far.

"They've been a bit hot and cold,” Edgerton said.

"On their day they could beat anyone in the competition but it's just about consistency and keeping the errors out of the game.

"The level of competition so far has been pretty high. Iwatched the number-one team (Queensland Thunder)get rolled convincingly by the number four team (Western Australia) so competition is quite high.”

Edgerton said the 14-year-olds have performed well and seen plenty of game time.

"Nick's played well, he hasn't had a lot of success with the batting but neither has Connor, mind you,” he said.

"Nick's pitched a few times and got some outs, so he's played well.”

While Nick is becoming somewhat of a veteran at the National Championships, Connor is playing at his first nationals.

"He's made some mistakes in the field and had some unlucky calls with his batting,” Edgerton said.

"He's got a few outs as catcher and in the outfield.

"They've played well without being exceptional but they've been thoroughly enjoying the experience.”
