Girls keeping eye on the ball
THE inaugural women’s AFL Capricornia league champion will be decided in a grand final carnival tomorrow at Rockhampton Cricket Ground.
First-placed Yeppoon will tackle Brothers and Muddies play BITS with the winner of each semi progressing to the final.
BITS coach Allan Mostert said that his girls were excited but focused ahead of the carnival.
“They’ve put a fair bit of importance on it,” he said.
“They will really want to be the best that they can be, which is great, but they’re as serious as the blokes about playing footy.
“You’ve got the guys playing tomorrow and they’re fair dinkum, but I can tell you come Sunday our girls are just as fair dinkum.”
Mostert said that he was impressed with how much the girls had improved throughout their first season of footy.
“They’re still learning, but the improvement over the last six or seven weeks has been great. They’ve gone from having really no idea to playing not too bad a brand of footy,” he said.
“From what was going to be just a bit of a giggle, they’re now very serious, at training they were extremely serious and they’re out to win it.
“That’s what they want to do and that’s what they’ve been training to do.
“Next year hopefully it continues; we get more and more girls getting interested all the time. Soon we’ll have to start knocking some back because we’ve got too many.”
The carnival kicks off at 11am with the final scheduled for 2pm.
