AUSTRALIA Zoo has welcomed their second giraffe calf in just four weeks.

The newcomer is baby Tulip's half-sister, who was born in July.

First-time mum Penny gave birth to the healthy female calf on Thursday at 11.51am, with the baby standing up and walking within the first hour of birth.

Australia Zoo curator Kelsey Engle said mother and baby were doing well.

"The calf is a healthy height and weight. She found her feet very soon after birth, and started suckling from mum not long after," Ms Engle said.

"Penny is also adjusting really well to motherhood in these early stages," she said.

"She began licking and cleaning the baby almost immediately after the birth, and seems to be a really affectionate mother.

"The pair have quickly formed a really great bond - In fact, the bub is following her mum so closely that the pair have already ventured outside together.

"We are really thrilled with how everything is going."

Penny's calf came a little earlier than expected.

The zoo's blood tests told them birth was imminent but lab results came after Penny had already given birth.

Penny's calf is the third giraffe arrival at Australia Zoo in less than 12 months, signifying a strong breeding program.

Mother and daughter will reportedly spend time together behind the scenes to bond in the following weeks.

With only an estimated 80,000 giraffes left in the wild due to poaching and habitat loss, the births are significant to the worldwide population.
