Giddy Goat nightclub's debts detailed in court documents

ACCUMULATED unpaid superannuation, failure to lodge a tax return and failure to pay income tax has amounted to a debt of more than a million dollars owed by the new owners of the Giddy Goat Bar and Cafe who bought the business lease in January 2017 from previous owners Georgina and Karl Schamburg.

The figures, some of which date from 2014, come from documents filed in the Federal Court in February this year and show the trading company of the business SHG Pty Ltd owes a total of $1,007,082.04.

Previous directors Georgina and Karl Schamburg bought the East St building in 2013 and also operated the lease.

The lease was sold to Peter Trennery and Jonathan Sharvin in January 2017.

Some of the debt was accumulated between 2014-2016 when business was owned by the Schamburgs.

Lawyers for Mr Schamburg say, and The Morning Bulletin accepts, there is no suggestion the Schamburgs owe the money as the proceedings are against SHG Pty Ltd, which they no longer own.

The Deputy Commissioner of Taxation is also suing each of the Schamburgs in the District Court to recover other tax-related liability that remains unpaid.

Claims date from 2018 but neither an appearance nor a defence has been filed in either case.

The Schamburgs sold the building that houses The Giddy Goat in February this year for more than $3 million.

Mr Trennery previously told The Morning Bulletin the wind-up notice and notice for court action took him by surprise, but the extent or details of the debt could not be revealed at the time.

"It was shocking ... it's never nice to hear and it's never nice to have those conversations with staff," he said after receiving the notice.

Despite the ongoing legal issues, both the bar and cafe have remained fully functional and open for business and Mr Trennery has urged locals to come out and support small businesses.

The taxation matter appeared before the Federal Court on May 10 in Brisbane where an adjournment was granted until tomorrow.

Mr Trennery declined to make any further comments on the matter on behalf of himself and Jonathan Sharvin while the matter was before the courts.

Mr and Mrs Schamburg were approached for comment regarding the proceedings but have declined to speak on the record.
