Giants happy to win ugly

SEASON 2015 is not even half over and already the GWS Giants have broken the club record for most wins.

Challenged early in the final quarter by an under-strength Brisbane Lions, the Giants pulled away to record a comfortable 14.13 (97) to 10.7 (67) victory - their seventh of the season.

GWS coach Leon Cameron said the win may have been ugly, but the effort by his players was commendable after last week's disappointing loss to the Western Bulldogs.

"Our actual ability to have that sort of scrap and fight, and win contested ball, when things aren't going your way … that was the pleasing part of the game," Cameron said. "It was an up and down game, but to come away with a five-goal win, from where we sit, is fantastic."

Jeremy Cameron booted three goals for the Giants with fellow talls Cam McCarthy and James Stewart, and midfielder Stephen Coniglio all booting two.

With almost all of their talls sidelined by injury, the Lions were forced to rely on their running players for goals, Rohan Bewick and Dayne Beans leading the way with three each.

Brisbane coach Justin Leppitsch said he was pleased with his young team's performance.

"We've got a really depleted list, a lot of first-gamers, second-gamers out there, but they were good. They gave a really competitive effort out there, so I was happy with that," Leppitsch said.

Hawthorn last night cruised to a 63-point win over a spirited St Kilda at Etihad Stadium.
