Getting kids hooked on fishing a page at a time

PELICAN WATERS-based fishing guru Rob Paxevanos loves to share the joy of fishing and his daughter, Hailey, is following in his footsteps.

The eight-year-old, who loves to fish with her dad, noticed other kids were not doing the same thing with their parents.

When Rob suggested maybe they did not know how, she came up with a way to help by writing a book.

Father and daughter teamed up to write Kids Fishing: a guide for kids by kids, which will be launched with two family events this weekend.

Mr Paxevanos, the host of Fishing Australia, said he hoped the book would get other families out to enjoy the great outdoors.

"If we can give people an experience, and they catch a fish, then they'll fish more often, but it's not just about fishing. It's a beautiful and social environment."

Mr Paxevanos said the Sunshine Coast environment was perfect for fishing and the book probably would not have eventuated if he and his family still lived in Canberra.

"There's so much variety of locations up here - we couldn't have done it if we lived anywhere else," he said.

The book has basic information including what type of hook to use, what type of bait to buy or catch, and how to tie a knot.

He said the book had become a family affair and other families had also been involved in getting the information and the language just right for kids.

"We gave the book to other families as we were writing along the way and said, 'Right, what do you do now?'" he said.

And he said that although the book was designed for children, he could see mums and dads who were beginners at fishing picking it up "and they'll be away".

Sunshine Coast division two councillor Tim Dwyer said the book would draw attention to the Coast.

"Fishing is the most popular outdoor recreation activity in south-east Queensland so this book has the potential to provide more tremendous exposure for our region to kids and their parents around Australia."

The book will be launched at a fishing expo at the Pelican Waters Tavern this Saturday at the Kawana Waters Hotel on Sunday from noon until 5pm both days.
