UPDATE: thunderstorm hits Fraser Coast

UPDATE 6.30pm: DRIVERS in Tiaro have pulled over to escape the worst of the weather, as severe thunderstorms hit the Fraser Coast.

By 6pm, heavy rain, damaging winds and frequent lightning was moving from the south-west parts of the Fraser Coast to the east.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology's website, the thunderstorm is moving in a south-easterly direction.

EARLIER:THOSE living in Maryborough should expect to experience heavy rain, damaging winds, large hail and possible flash flooding within the hour.

The Bureau of Meteorology's latest storm warning shows severe thunderstorm activity is expected to hit north of Rainbow Beach.

Meteorologist Michelle Berry said the storm was starting to hit parts of the Fraser Coast region, and was moving fast.

"It's getting into the coast just south of Maryborugh now and is moving quite quickly," Michelle said.

"Predicting if it will hit Hervey Bay is a bit trickier; it might not hit that area at all, but there could be more storms to come through tonight that will hit that area."

She said if Hervey Bay were to be affected by the current severe storm, it would hit in the next  two hours.
