Christensen accuses 'greenies' of Abbot Pt hypocrisy

EXTREME Greens had been stranded on "Hypocrite Reef" after the fast-tracking of the Abbot Point port expansion project, Federal Dawson MP George Christensen said.

"The Greens wanted on-shore disposal, and now they have it, but they are still clinging to an argument about the reef," Mr Christensen said.

"Under the new plan, dredged material will be placed on land adjacent to the port but somehow Greenpeace has managed to still make it about the reef, using a social media post headlined: 'Hunt Fast-tracks Reef Destruction' to claim that: 'Our Government wants the destruction of the Reef to be a quick, shady deal'.

"All the usual suspects, from GetUp! to the Greens, are still jumping up and down about the reef, even though it is now irrelevant, because they have nothing else," he said.

"GetUp! demonstrated its complete lack of understanding by claiming on social media that the government "won't even bother with a full Environmental Impact Assessment".

Mr Christensen said the Department of the Environment had determined all proposals would require a full environmental impact assessment.

"This will be a very rigorous process," he said.

"Australia has some of the most stringent environmental protection laws in the world, and these proposals will be assessed thoroughly."

Conservationists are maintaining their objection to the plan to dump dredge spoil in the Caley Valley Wetlands near Abbot Point.

Mackay Conservation Group will protest outside Mr Christensen's office at 12.30pm today. The group will also be represented in the Federal Court in Brisbane in relation to its reef dumping court case.
