Gator that bit off woman's arm is caught, killed

AN ALLIGATOR that bit off a woman's arm in a United States river has been caught and killed.

Rachel D. Lilienthal, 37, of Orlando was swimming in the Wekiva River on Saturday, upstream from a crowded beach area when the alligator struck.

Tourists rent canoes and drink at the nearby Wekiva Island.

Local news reports she was bitten at least twice, and her right arm torn off above the elbow.

Ms Lilienthal was freed from her amphibious attacker when a kayaker hit the alligator with a paddle.

She was then brought to the shore for first aid.

The crocodile was euthanized by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission on Sunday.
