Earthworks start on Gateway Mwy North upgrade

EARTHWORKS are now underway on the billion dollar Gateway Upgrade North project.

Fulton Hogan crews have started the arduous task of moving hundreds of thousands of cubic metres of soil and rock from alongside the motorway at Nudgee and to the north of Nundah Creek.

After the earthworks are completed in 12 months, major construction will begin to add two lanes to the 11.3km four-lane motorway between Nudgee and Bracken Ridge.

"For the 75,000 vehicles on this stretch of motorway each day, this upgrade can't come soon enough," Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson said.

"Construction of the new lanes is expected to start in the middle of next year and take approximately three years to complete, weather permitting.

"Works will also include upgrading the Nudgee interchange and widening the Deagon Deviation to two lanes in each direction."
