THE Gladstone region is an ideal location to build a gas power station, according to a leading energy expert.

With the region just a few years from exporting millions of tonnes of LNG, an energy source recognised as much cleaner than coal, some people might wonder why the region wouldn't use some of that LNG to generate power.

"Gladstone is a logical place to build a gas power plant," Dr Aman Maung Than Oo, from CQUniversity, said.

"Power plants in Gladstone can utilise the abundant supply of gas produced in (LNG plants currently under construction) to generate electricity."

He said gas power plants could play a valuable role in Australia's energy future.

"The distributed nature of combined cycle gas turbine can play a significant role..." he said.

"Its potential to mitigate the intermittency of renewable sources is already proven."
