POPSEY the 30-year-old gander died a valiant death, defending his mate Anna.

Rockhampton's Marcene Kruse found the body of her beloved pet goose in her Berserker backyard on Monday.

She believes he died defending Anna from dogs which managed to scale the fence and tried to attack the geese in the early hours of Monday morning.

Sadly, Anna had to be put down after the injuries she received in the attack.

Marcene said her neighbour heard the dogs attacking during the night, but was too scared to approach them.

She alerted Marcene to the attack in the morning.

Marcene said she thought her geese would be safe in the yard.

She said she was "totally devastated" by the circumstances of their deaths.

"It would not have happened if dogs had not been roaming at night," she said.

Marcene wants people to take responsibility for their pets, making sure they're secured at night.

"I just hope people take heed and be aware that there are dogs roaming at night," she said.

"They should make sure their pets are safe."

Rockhampton Regional Council CEO Evan Pardon said the incident was a timely reminder to keep pets secure.

"We sympathise with Ms Kruse and remind pet owners that this type of incident is one of the many reasons that it is important to ensure your pet is secured in your yard and does not wander," he said.
