RUGBY LEAGUE: It may have been two months since the Gladstone rugby league season ended, but not for Country and City players.

It was the Calliope Rotary and Calliope Roosters Footy Club Drought Fundraiser.

The two teams, comprised of past and present players and even politicians - went at it at Bunting Park in Calliope on a sultry Saturday night in front of a packed house.

The community spirit to help our struggling farmers was there for all to see.

As for the result?

Country's Chris Lambert scored the winning try. His teammate, Gladstone Region councillor Kahn Goodluck, praised those who participated in the game and those who watched a 22-20 thriller.

"It was a great turnout and the community came out in force," Goodluck said.

There was some political heat on the field when City player and Deputy Mayor Chris Trevor collected Goodluck who finished second-best.

"It was certainly a competitive game and it wasn't about winning or losing and I'm pretty sore, but I gave it my best shot," Goodluck said.

Both he and Calliope Roosters president Cam Mastersagreed that an annual or bi-annual event is not out of the question.

"We've had a talk quickly and I think everyone thought because of the success of it, that it would be good to definitely try again," Masters said.

The women's Country versus City curtain-raiser match ended in a draw. In another match, the Calliope Roosters under-12 side beat Blackall by two points.
