Gallery full as new councillor is sworn in

DR PJ Sobhanian has been officially sworn in at the Gladstone Regional Council meeting today.

He said he was humbled to join the office of the council, and was honoured by the turnout in the public gallery where not a spare seat could be seen.

"I am looking forward to representing our community to the best of my ability," Dr Sobhanian said.

"In particular the outlying areas. Just last Thursday I was in Ambrose where some people were still without power from Tropical Cyclone Marcia."

Although Dr Sobhanian has already been attending meetings, he said being able to do so in the capacity of a councillor would hopefully put him in a better position to take action on issues raised by the community.

Deputy Mayor Matt Burnett congratulated the new councillor on behalf of Mayor Gail Sellers, who is in Japan visiting Gladstone's sister city Saiki.

Dr Sobhanian was the highest polling candidate who missed out at the 2012 council election.

He replaces Leo Neill-Ballantine, who resigned last year.
