SURFING: Twenty students from Discovery Christian College took part in the Wide Bay Surfing trials held in Agnes Water as part of the Discovery Surfing Academy (DSA).

And 12 of them have made the team which will represent the Wide Bay region at the State Titles to be held in Tallebudgera in August.

The top-ranked surfers in each of the four categories were also from DSA, Paris Ryan (Open girls), Mason Wood (Open Boys), Pixi Kallas (under-16 girls) and Alki Kallas (U16 boys).

Co-ordinator of DSA James Osborne said the outcome was nothing but positive.

"There were multiple DSA members selected in all of the age categories, however the future is looking very bright with the entire U16 girls team being made up from DSA students," he said.

"It was great to see school surfing in this region is so alive and well with great participation rates and some excellent competitive surfers representing their schools from across the region especially amongst those who made the long commute from Rainbow Beach."

Poor conditions minimised the effect of the 'home ground advantage', but Osborne said competition was very tight especially in the younger age categories.

A total of 48 surfers took part in the trials and Osborne said they made most of the 'messy' conditions.

"With the promise of a building swell, the competition got under-way in small knee high waves," he said.

"Unfortunately the swell didn't quite eventuate and the surfers battled it out in very small wind affected waves all morning."
