Funds for health

THE irony of the situation was not lost on Federal Minister for Rural and Regional Health Warren Snowdon in Agnes Water yesterday, a town without a doctor for six months, to launch a new health initiative.

Mr Snowdon and Member for Flynn Chris Trevor were on the campaign trail to try and shore up Labor’s tenuous hold on the regional seat of Flynn and problems in Queensland generally. It was also announced about the same time yesterday by PM Julia Gillard that the Labor campaign launch would be in Brisbane on August 15.

But yesterday Mr Snowdon, along with Mr Trevor, made a flying visit to the Discovery Coast Community Health Service (DCCHS) to announce a federal grant of $641,965 to help encourage Discovery Coast residents to get active and live a healthy lifestyle.

The Mobilising our Communities – Getting the Inactive Active and the Unhealthy Healthy project will be run by the Gladstone Regional Council and offer a range of community based programs to prevent and reduce obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

“This is another step forward in Federal Labor’s plans to build a better health system and better hospitals,” Mr Trevor said.

And while the money was seen as most welcome, the Agnes Water community would also be happy to hear Mr Trevor and Mr Snowdon recognise the problems in getting rural doctors in place as promised to cut through red tape and get a GP on the ground as soon as possible.
