School gets an early start on week of celebrating Under 8s

THERE was a myriad of colour and a buzz of activity on Gladstone West State School oval on Friday as the school celebrated its under 8 students with a morning of playing, exploring and making.

As an early start to Under 8s Week, which runs from Monday until May 27, the Years 6 and 7 students at the school helped teachers organise activities from 9am until 10.15am for Years Prep to 3.

The school holds the event annually and this year there were more than 400 students involved.

Deputy principal Annette Norris said the day was a good opportunity to celebrate kids under eight and get back to fun activities.

"The Year 6 and 7 students love it just as much," she said.

Some of the more popular activities were edible bracelets, slime, face-painting, an obstacle course, kite-making and crown-making.

Prep teacher Rebecca West said her students had had a lot of fun.

"We've been talking about it in class so they knew what to expect," Ms West said.

"We've had some fantastic mums come in and volunteer. We couldn't do without it. The school community really comes together."

Year 3 students Lauren Porteous and Casey Llewellyn enjoyed making edible necklaces.

Lauren said she enjoyed the day because she liked to make things.

Casey said: "You really got to enjoy yourself because it's the last year for me and Lauren."

This year, the theme for Under 8s Week is "Celebrating Community - Sharing Music, Movement and Culture. Think locally!"

Gladstone Mayor Gail Sellers said she supported the principle of the event and, being a former teacher, had always been a part of Under 8s Week activities.

"It is a wonderful opportunity for different groups to get together for a morning of fun activities," she said.
