Free tuitions online

HUNDREDS of local students are taking their struggles with schoolwork online with the introduction of yourtutor.

A unique, free learning service offered by Gladstone Regional Libraries, yourtutor connects students to qualified tutors for individual conversations about homework, assignments, exam preparation and study questions. Yourtutor was launched locally in March following a commitment by Gladstone Regional Council to provide ongoing funds for the service. Funding had formerly been provided by Queensland State Libraries.

“State Libraries approached local councils to take over the funding to which Gladstone agreed,” Gladstone City Library young people’s librarian Sue Norris said. “I think it’s great they have taken it on board.”

Since then, Ms Norris and her library staff have been busily promoting the handy tool through the yourtutor Roadshow.

More than 3000 students attending state education schools across the Gladstone region were visited by library staff in three days, a huge success, according to Ms Norris, who said hundreds of students had visited the online classroom since.

“We plan to extend this roadshow into schools in the old Miriam Vale shire and Boyne Valley area plus Catholic Education schools,” Ms Norris said.

“Yourtutor is a godsend for students and gets them learning in an environment they like – online.

“It’s a great resource and doesn’t override what is taught in the classroom, instead complementing it.

“Students are offered one-on-one learning with expert tutors matched up to their year level, topic and qualifications.”

The service is free to all local students with a Gladstone Regional Libraries library card number which is used to log in at www.gladstonerc.qld.gov.au/libraries.

AT A GLANCE

Yourtutor is designed to help Years 4 to 12 plus TAFE and first year Uni students.

The online classroom allows expert tutors to review specific homework and assignment questions with students.

Questions can be raised on mathematics, science, English, research and study skills.

Free to all local students with a Gladstone Regional Libraries library card number.

Students can connect from any internet connection between 4pm and 8pm, Monday to Friday.
