Video: Barbie lunch gives mates a chance to chat
IT MIGHT not be a free lunch, but this barbecue does come with free friends.
Every Wednesday at noon Site Skills Training Gladstone hosts a barbecue to raise money for Mates in Construction - a community organisation working to reduce suicide and improve mental health in the construction industry.
So far Site Skills Training has raised $1300 through selling burgers and sausages.
The initiative was started by operations manager Jason Buxton, who said it was a timely reminder that some people were facing serious emotional struggles through FIFO work or a lack of job security.
"In this industry there are no warm and fuzzies, so it can be difficult to talk about feelings," Mr Buxton said.
"But these are issues we need to talk about. We don't push it but it's an environment where people can talk."
Youth suicide rates in the construction industry are twice as common than in other industries.
Grab a lunch at 17 South Tree Dr every Wednesday. Call ahead if you are bringing a few mates on 4979 1722.
Please note: This story has been altered from the original that was printed in The Observer on July 16 which said the barbecue was free. The Observer apologises for the error.
