Queensland Health fraudster abused power

SOUTH West Hospital and Health Service chief executive Lindsay Godfrey says rigorous measures are in place that helped bring to light the actions of fraudster Veronica Anne Chung.

On Thursday the former South West Hospital and Health Service chief financial officer pleaded guilty to several fraud offences - including dishonestly obtaining benefits or advantages, uttering forged documents and compounding indictable offences.

Mr Godfrey said the health service took all matters relating to fraudulent, illegal or inappropriate behaviour very seriously.

"We have rigorous measures in place to detect anyone acting inappropriately," he said.

"The south-west community can be confident that our health service will continue to demand the highest standards of behaviour from our staff and all with whom we have dealings."

Chung made fraudulent claims she had a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Queensland.

Her conduct was exposed when she tried to buy an iPad last year using a co-worker's signature on the tax invoice receipt.

An error in the banking details saw the receipt returned to the co-worker which prompted an internal investigation. Chung also attempted to abuse her position to obtain CCTV footage from the computer store.

Mr Godfrey said the measures put in place proved successful in bringing the matter to the attention of the health service, which was then appropriately reported to police.

"The overwhelming majority of our 878 staff do the right thing and the actions of one person should not be allowed to tarnish the reputation of the rest, or of our health service as a whole," he said.
