Frantic fight to save man's life

A FRASER Island first responder has told of the frantic efforts to save a 69-year-old man's life after he was found floating facedown at Eastern Beach by a relative about 4.30pm on Saturday.

Fraser Island resident David Anderson was called to the scene after the Scarborough man had been dragged from the water not breathing.

A passing tour bus was flagged down by the man's family.

Several surf lifesavers were on the bus and they immediately started CPR.

Mr Anderson arrived with another first responder and resuscitation efforts continued until the island's paramedic arrived and took over, using a defibrillator to try to restart the man's heart.

The RACQ Careflight helicopter arrived, but by then it was clear the man was not responding to resuscitation efforts.

The tragedy of the event was compounded by the fact the man's family was on the beach watching the hour-and-a-half-long efforts to resuscitate him.

"It wasn't very pleasant at all," Mr Anderson said.

Mr Anderson said he believed the man and his family had been camping at Dilli Village on the island before the incident. He said the incident happened just north of Dilli Village.

Mr Anderson said it was unclear if the man had any health issues that may have contributed to his death, saying that would have to be determined in the coroner's report.

Dilli Village was contacted but chose not to provide a response.
