WATCH: Tannum muso scores spot on The Voice's Team Jessie
A FORMER Tannum Sands student has sung his way into The Voice, making it into Team Jessie J.
Calvin Swart wooed the judges last night with his clever rendition of Taylor Swift's song Style.
Armed with just his guitar he performed the hit with his own version and turning the chairs of the Madden brothers and Jessie J.
Calvin lived in Tannum Sands with his family for four years, attending Tannum Sands State High School.
He moved to Brisbane in 2012 to finish his final year at high school and hopefully pursue a career in music.
Playing music was a salvation for the 20 year old who relocated to Australia with his family from South Africa, seeking a better lifestyle after a family tragedy.
Musically Calvin has drawn on many personal experiences in his life including the murder of his Grandfather in his homeland. With the help of music he is able to dedicate it to his late maternal grandfather and know that he would be proud.
While still at high school he auditioned for the X Factor but was unsuccessful.
This time around he felt like he had something to prove.
With no chair turned until the end of his song, he said he was nervous he would walk away without being chosen.
"It's very disheartening when you're singing your heart out and no chairs have tuirned.
"One of the producers said to me 'you're never going to turn a chair by staring at it' and that was just the best advice.
"I was getting disheartened as the song went on but it just made me fight harder," he said.
Next time we will see Calvin take the stage it will be on the battle rounds.
