NATIONAL Rugby League stars visited Gladstone State High, Tooloa State High School and Chanel College on Wednesday as part of a tour of central Queensland.

NRL's Michael Hancock was enthused by the students he met in Gladstone, who he said show real leadership.

"We spent all day in schools today, talking not only about sport, but about life skills that are going to help them after they've finished," he said.

The tour is in partnership with mining company Anglo American, and aims to support Bowen Basin mining communities, mine workers and their families.

Jake Kearnen, 15, was one of over a hundred Chanel College students listening intently to NRL's Paul Dyer and Michael Hancock speak at the college sports hall on Wednesday.

There was an example of how a friend became paralysed and everything started going downhill for him.

"He started losing friends and could hardly work," Jake said.

Jake was surprised at how much of an effect an accident could have on someone's life. He took away a positive message, that it's important to look after himself when he leaves school.

Local legend Brisbane Bronco Jharal Yow Yeh, originally from Emu Park, will tomorrow delight students in Biloela and Moura, where school children will converge for motivational and skills clinics.
