Fly Fishing to target international anglers
LURING the lucrative fly fishing market to the Gladstone Region is high on the agenda for the Boyne Tannum HookUp committee ahead of next year's event.
HookUp is introducing a Fly Fishing category in 2019, which has been brought to the event by Justin Nye of Gladstone Fly & Sportfishing.
The category will target giant trevally and golden trevally in a brag mat competition judged by the length of fish.
Internationally renowned fly fisherman Joshua Hutchins from Aussie Fly Fisher will come up to fish and film the event and will also do fly fishing demonstrations at Bray Park during the May 3-5 competition.
Boyne Tannum HookUp president Jennifer McGuire said the move means Gladstone can now attract international anglers for fly fishing.
"Fly fishing is a strategic move and working with Justin Nye we have trophy fly fishing on offer that people can come to from across the globe," she said.
"It's an international asset we haven't tapped into, fly fishing isn't big here but that will be an area we'll develop.
"The international fly fishing anglers are financial and spend big tourism dollars in destinations.
"The top 10 great global destinations for fly fishing include places like America, Canada and New Zealand; so HookUp and Gladstone Fly & Sportsfishing are targeting for Australia to gain a reputation good enough to be on this list.
"We're starting out small by targeting giant trevally and golden trevally for the 2019 event to ensure a successful formula to expand on, because fly fishing anglers travel the globe to catch golden trevally.
"We're all excited about the potential this has."
