Fixing greyhound racing reputation part of review

ALONG with investigating the regulations around animal welfare in the greyhound racing industry, a barrister will also have to recommend how the industry could come back from having a damaged reputation.

The State Government announced a review into the racing industry and the terms of reference were released this week.

Barrister Alan MacSporran QC will lead the review and has a list of six requirements.

The fifth states the review will "be mindful of the Queensland greyhound racing industry's need to maintain a social licence".

It states the review will make recommendations to promote integrity and public confidence into the industry.

Other items on the terms of reference include assessing how effective regulations are when it comes to monitoring and detecting breaches of the Racing Act with a particular focus on animal welfare.

Another includes assessing how suitable the current monitoring regime is.

Racing Minister Bill Byrne said earlier this month it was not "rocket science" to suggest there had been a regulatory oversight problem in the greyhound industry.

He said it was his intention to do everything humanly possible to stamp out live baiting practices in future.

Everyone will be able to have their say on the review, including greyhound owners, trainers and residents.

"I have commissioned this review to determine how live baiting was allowed to go undetected, how widespread the practice is and what changes are needed," Mr Byrne said this week.

"Consultation with the key stakeholders and the wider community is an essential component of this review."
