Three of Yandina Five to stand trial on drug charges

FIVE men, including three of the Yandina Five, have been committed to stand trial on drug charges.

A sixth will find out in July if he has a case to answer.

Joshua Shane Carew, 30, of Coolum Beach, Steven Michael Smith, 28, of Cooloolabin, Paul Jeffrey Landsdowne, 56, of Eerwah Vale, Mr Smith's father, Michael William Smith, 55, of Yandina Creek, Allan John Field, 39, of Verrierdale, and Stephen Lee, 41, of Gladstone faced committal proceedings in Maroochydore Magistrates Court yesterday.

Their charges were the result of a police investigation, Operation Kilo Deacon, which involved months of telephone intercepts and surveillance.

Cheese names were allegedly used as codes for drug lines for sale during the recorded conversations.

The operation concluded with a series of raids on the Sunshine Coast on July 4 last year which netted a large amount of cash, methylamphetamine, ecstasy and cannabis, and drug equipment.

The men face a total of 34 charges relating to the investigation, including trafficking and supplying dangerous drugs.

Mr Carew, Steven Smith, and Mr Lansdowne were on bail on the charges when they were among five men arrested under the VLAD laws for associating at the Yandina Hotel.

Magistrate Annette Hennessey committed Mr Carew, both Mr Smiths, Mr Field and Mr Lee for trial.

Mr Lansdowne's lawyer, John Cook, made a written submission to the court that his client had no case to answer.

Mr Cook said third party evidence was not admissible unless there was appropriate corroborating evidence, which the prosecution case was lacking.

Magistrate Annette Hennessy allowed the prosecution until June 6 to provide a written response and will give her decision on July 4.

All of the men will remain on bail.
