THE Gladstone Dance Festival, held at the weekend, marked Yasmine McGuiness' first solo at a competition and what a way to start.

The dancer, aged 12, won the Helen Graham Trophy, which is awarded to the aggregate winner for modern dance in the 11, 12 and 13 years age group.

Yasmine has been dancing since she was five and takes classes at Danceography studio.

The hip-hop aficionado was beaming after winning first place in her jazz/hip hop solo on Sunday.

"I am very pleased with what I've done," she said.

"I had a few worries going in."

Yasmine also placed third in her contemporary solo on Saturday and was in a group hip-hop act on Sunday afternoon.

She will be performing with the rest of her studio members at the Gladstone Harbour Festival on Thursday evening.

"I definitely want to go further in my dancing."
