Revealed: Whincup’s new Red Bull wheels

THIS is the first glimpse of the Red Bull Racing machine that Jamie Whincup hopes will pilot him to an eighth V8 Supercars championship in 2018.

The Daily Telegraph has obtained exclusive pictures of the Red Bull Holden Racing Team ZB Commodore, which will be revealed on Friday.

Dubbed the 'last Commodore', although this hasn't been confirmed by Holden, the ZB Supercar's sleek coupe/hatch shape is set to produce impressive performance results.

Red Bull Racing fans will also be shocked to see the car's traditional navy blue, red and yellow paintwork replaced by a predominantly white body with shades of black and blue down the side.

Whincup's team have developed the ZB Supercar over the past 18 months and the Holden ace can't wait to drive a fully finished car for the first time at the official test day at Sydney Motorsport Park next month.

"The car has got some great flow, some really nice lines and I think it is a good looking race car," Whincup beamed about the ZB, which all Holden teams will compete in this season.

"I've done a day in our test car, but I can't wait to drive the final product with all the new parts.

"We've designed the aero package around the Next Gen Commodore, which is a hatch and gives more headroom and luggage space for the passengers in the road car.

"But the side effect to that is the car as a race car looks great and it has nice air flow down over the right wing.

"We've also got some new wall paint for next year. Year after year Red Bull and Holden have done a great job in changing the car up completely.

"And based on our testing, the car's performance will be as good as we've had in the past - it's exciting."

Over two months have passed since Whincup claimed his unprecedented seventh V8 championship, but he still has fond memories of the epic finish in Newcastle.

He battled from behind the majority of the year, before stealing the championship from underneath Ford's Scott McLaughlin in the last race of the year.

The 34-year-old has now claimed two more titles than legendary drivers Mark Skaife, Dick Johnson and Ian Geoghegan.

Whincup expects the competitiveness to continue in the V8 Supercar ranks in 2018.

It's why he believes the entire Red Bull Racing Team will have to improve to win back-to-back titles.

"No doubt we've got to do a lot of work behind the scenes to be competitive this season," he said.

"The performance of the car comes from all the mechanical things underneath it, not the aerodynamics.

"But I'm confident the crew have done that, even with the massive job of getting our aerodynamics right.

"No doubt the competition will step up, but we are looking forward to the challenge."

The Red Bull Holden Racing Team are also developing the V6 Supercar engine, which is set to debut later this year as a 'wildcard' at select events.

The V6 engine is part of Supercars Gen2 program to allow manufacturers and teams to use an engine other than a V8.

Whincup has no doubts the V6 engine concept will be a success.

"I think it's a great thing for the sport," he said.

"We will develop this season and roll out in 2019."
