First face transplant patient dies

THE world's first recipient of a face transplant in 2005 died in April after "a long illness”, a hospital has revealed.

French woman Isabelle Dinoire (left) received a graft of the nose, lips and chin from a brain-dead donor after being mauled by her dog.

Le Figaro newspaper reported Ms Dinoire's body rejected the transplant last year and she developed cancer from anti-rejection drugs. Her death was suppressed to protect her family's privacy. French Doctor Jean-Pierre Meningaud has saidof Dinoire's death: "We should put these transplants on hold pending advances in immunology.”
