UPDATE: FIREFIGHTERS have declared a CBD office safe after workers detected the smell of gas.

Emergency services were called to the Centrelink office on Bell St about 9.12am.

Hundreds of its workers were evacuated while firefighters used specialist equipment to inspect the building.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Inspector Warren Buckley said crews responded with specialist gas detection gear to try and determine what the substance was.

It is still unknown what that was, an expert from Toowoomba Regional Council was also going to attend to try and determine it and give the building full clearance.

Paramedics attended the scene but no one was transported to hospital. Some people did complain of illness.

Workers are expected to return to work later this morning. 

EARLIER: AN inner city office has been evacuated after workers reported detecting gas inside.

A Queensland fire and emergency services spokesman said crews were called to the Centrelink office at 12 Bell St at 9.12am.

The spokesman said firefighters were currently doing atmospheric testing after reports of gas fumes.

Police and paramedics are also on scene.
