Now is a fine time to go pink for cancer

KAY Brown knows the heartache and fear of being diagnosed with cancer.

Now a volunteer for the Cancer Council Gladstone branch, she endeavours to raise money for a cure whenever she can - including the upcoming Pink Ribbon events.

In 2012 she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

With radiation therapy the cancer was curable, but she still takes medication and has a test every three months to ensure it does not come back.

She said the worst part of being diagnosed with the disease was the fear.

"It's just so scary. Fortunately I had family and friends around for support and they could help me with transport for whenever I needed to go to Rockhampton," she said.

Ms Brown and the ladies of the local Cancer Council branch have been busily organising not one, but two Pink Ribbon fundraising breakfasts.

This is the first year a second event will be hosted at the Tannum Sands Surf Life Saving Club.

The first was held at the Gladstone Entertainment Centre on Friday.

Cancer Council Gladstone vice-president Ros Newberry said the fundraiser would support the ongoing search for a cure and programs available to cancer sufferers.

"It's always about research - it's just paramount," she said. "It's only through research that a cure will be found."

For professional help, phone the cancer helpline on 13 11 20.
