Finding a mining job a hard slog

ROBERT Hall wants the same thing as most people - a job.

Mr Hall has been a qualified upholsterer all his working life, but last Christmas he decided to make a switch.

"I wanted to get out and do something else and I just thought at Christmas time that I wanted to get into the mines," he said.

Mr Hall visited his relatives in Gladstone last week to spend time hunting for a job in the region.

He has decided he would also be happy to work in some other branch of the resources sector.

Despite all the talk of a shortage of workers for big resource companies, Mr Hall says finding a job in the sector is not as easy as it looks. He has done plenty of training to boost his CV, but is still waiting for a positive response to his job applications.

"I've done the conduct haul truck operations, which is a dump truck course with all the tickets," he said.

"I've got the current Queensland generic coal surface induction. I've got a current Queensland Coal Board medical and I've got a Queensland heavy rigid truck licence."

Mr Hall has gone to all this effort to prove his initiative and skills, but he is becoming frustrated the positions in the mining sector call for experience.

He hopes to get on one of the resources-related construction projects in the Gladstone region.

"I'm not going to give up," he said.

Mr Hall said he would be interested in working for QR National's Wiggins Island Rail Project.
