Chicken for bait? Read more about Filippo's fishing secrets

GLADSTONE bus driver Fillippo Velli shared his top tips for fishing with The Observer for today's Fishing With ... section.

Name: Filippo Velli

Occupation: Bus driver

How long have you been here for? I've been here for a couple of hours and have only caught a one legal size bream.

I fish with two rods and it's pretty windy so it's not relaxing like a lot of people think fishing is. I fish (here) a lot and last year I caught lots of fish, lots of salmon and bream.

Who taught you how to fish? Nobody really. I'm self-taught.

I'm from Brisbane but I moved up to Mackay to work as a bus driver and then moved down here to work for Stonestreets and have taught myself how to fish here. Some people give me tips.

How often do you go fishing? I would fish at least once a week but it depends if they are biting. If I catch lots of fish, like once I caught 12 salmon, I didn't need to go fishing for a couple of weeks. I always am fishing for food.

The best fish I have ever caught is...An 80cm threadfin salmon. I caught right here. I took it home to eat. I filleted it which was really bad. I don't know how. I shouldn't be allowed near a filleting knife.

What do you use for bait? Someone told me to use chicken breast with parmesan cheese. It works. The parmesan works as a burley and the fish go for the chicken. It's about the cheapest bait in town. Normal bait is 200g and it is around $5 but chicken is something like $5 for 1kg.
